Orchard Produce
To show what our trees can do and to help raise funds, the orchard volunteers make produce to sell at local events.
Apple Juice
This is made after Potton Apple Day with the fruit brought to the event as well as from local trees and, increasingly, our own orchard. The fruit is commercially pressed, bottled and pasteurised by Cam Valley Orchards at Kneesworth.
Cider
Surplus juice from the small helpers at Apple Day is the start of our cider story. From there, the juice is taken to a Potton cellar to work its magic. We have several heritage variety cider apples in the orchard which make a very varied selection of single variety ciders. Some best blended, but others excellent by themselves. The main bulk of the juice makes a lovely balanced cider drinkable raw at high 7% scrumpy levels, but diluted down to 5% it develops more subtle flavours suitable for a warm summer’s evening. Bottle conditioned, it develops a lovely fizz or mousse, too many and you won’t care what it’s called!
Fresh Apples
The best apples are picked and sold at our Apple Day on the last Sunday in September. Community groups help us to pick the fruit.
Fruit Vinegars
We love to experiment with our crops, whether cultivated or wild. A range of fruit infused vinegars have been very popular (Elderflower, chili, plum and berry). Look out for the new season’s range at events around town.
Preserves
Jams and pickles, made with whatever has grown well in Potton that year, are a favourite for Christmas hampers. Look out for them at local events and the Christmas market and switching on of the lights.
